Transport and accomodation
Why did we choose a campervan as a mode of transport and a place to stay? After using a campervan (or RV as they are called in the US and Canada) on a month long ski trip across British Columbia, it was absolutely clear for us that this is the best practice in terms of ski trips where you try to chase powder. We admit that using a campervan in winter needs some experience, but we find it very rewarding in terms of effectiveness of travelling around the island and weather based flexibility.

We found accommodation and car rental (having a car is a must) on Hokkaido pretty expensive. Campervan, which merges these two essential things, seemed to be the most reasonable option, giving you a lot of freedom to roam around the island. Renting such a car is still not that cheap, nevertheless might be just the same as a traditional accommodation and car rental, and in addition you are absolutely free to change your location and plans anytime you want.
