Desert

I’m in a real desert for the first time. The sun shines, the sand burns bare feet a little, there is an oasis, there is a lake, there is exotic vegetation… but something is wrong. Oh yes, I’m carrying skis on my shoulder. We climb a huge steep dune above the small settlement of Huacachina. On top, we put some wax on the ski base, while some people ask us, if we really intend to go down this way. Yes, absolutely! Moments later, we’re skiing down as fast and far as friction and gravity permit. A few turns and we are at the bottom, almost at a town’s street. A bit of laughter,

skis on the shoulder and we climb again, like in school days, on a local hill. Then another descent, a cold beer in the shade and up again. We have a lot of fun and the whole experience is so surreal that I have a hard time believing that it is really happening. In the afternoon, we go on a trip deep into the desert, on which they take us to the dunes in vehicles straight from Mad Max. The last descent, straight to the town, is done after dark, with only the stars and the town lights. A wonderful day, a lot of great fun, something completely different and a perfect ending to our trip.
