Living in the campervan
…is not for everyone. If you’re more into fancy hotels or want to experience the traditional Japanese accommodation, then skip this part. But if your top priority is having the ability to move and change plans freely – keep reading!
First thing you will quickly notice is that driving around Hokkaido in winter conditions is not an easy task. Estimated times of arrival from Google Maps are way too optimistic, so plan accordingly. Majority of the roads (like 98% majority) are covered with snow and even though the camper vans usually are four-wheel-drive, they are a bit slower than normal cars.

On top of that, local Hokkaido drivers are notorious for driving, let’s say, a bit too fast in heavy blizzard conditions.
So do not worry when some 4×4 Subarus or Toyotas will take you over leaving you in a huge cloud of super light Hokkaido snow. You will not be able to see anything for a moment, but it’s the part of the game. Second thing is the weather. I have seen some strong snowstorms in my life, but I have never witnessed a snowfall of such intensity as on Hokkaido. We even used goggles while driving to amplify the contrast, helped only a bit.
