In wintertime the campervans do not have running water – the sub zero temps would quickly freeze the water in the system and demolish the pipes and valves. That is why cooking and washing the dishes is a problem, but luckily there is a way.

Famous Seven Eleven (or SeicoMart or Lawson) convenience stores are absolutely everywhere! You can get some food, coffee, boiling water and use the toilet. „Ok, so if there is no running water in the van, how do you take shower?” – you might probably ask.

And here we reach the most interesting part of travelling across Hokkaido in a campervan. I have done numerous winter campervan skiing trips in various parts of the world, but none of them was so clean and fresh as the trip across Hokkaido.

The key are the famous onsens – hot springs that are a part of Japanese culture, and are absolutely everywhere. You can relax your strained muscles, take a hot shower and just watch the snow falling while sitting in a tub of lava-heated water.
