We also came across opinions that February is usually very good in terms of snow, although strong winds occur much more often – and our experience seems to prove that. On the contrary, January is supposed to be the best month to visit Hokkaido to score bottomless and windless days, but our friends who left Hokkaido just after we arrived were quite disappointed. It’s just weather, can’t fully predict the unpredictable. This way or another, if you choose to go in January or February you will be quite sure to get what you came there for – and additionally, by the end of February you might get a chance to witness some first sunny days.

We have also heard about sudden temperature rises in the middle of the winter, but during our trip we had sub zero temperatures nearly all the time. People used to skiing in the Alps and epic March conditions sometimes ask if March is a good time for going to Japan. Probably you can get good skiing and some sun and some pow as well, but actually this is what you can get in the Alps, without flying halfway across the world. Hokkaido is not just a ski destination, it is all about deep deep pow and this is what you go there for. And to get it, you need to be there in January or February.
