Let’s get down to essentials. How much do you care about style in freeriding?
I think style and aesthetics are the very essence of this sport. I can’t imagine anybody skiing down a line without style and calling himself or herself a freerider. Skiing just to get to the bottom of the line, regardless of style, is more “ski extreme” thing. True freeriding means skiing your line according to certain assumptions you make and certain ideas you have about a certain face, involving lots of creativity. You need to use your whole bag of skills and use them in a way the terrain allows you to. Potential observers need to be absolutely stunned when they see you ski. This is the ideal that we all should strive for. Beginners will not be able to do it right away, but you should not get discouraged. Train, practice, learn, express yourself. This is the idea – to be able to do it your way. People of free souls wanted something more, and they invented freeriding.
